A forthcoming in-ear gadget is claimed to be able to translate speech like the Babel Fish in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, or the Universal Translator gadget in Star Trek.

The Pilot

‘The Pilot’ is a small device which is designed to translate speech in other languages so the wearer can understand any language with ease.

The system, dubbed the Pilot, comprises two earpieces to be worn by two people who do not speak the same language and uses an app so the duo can converse with ease. The device is basically a really cool pair of earpieces which two people who don’t speak the same language can wear and use to interact with each other. A smart phone app will control the process of translation. Created by Waverly Labs, The Pilot will have an initial launch with translating capacities between English, Spanish, Italian and French. The company eventually plans to expand to more languages including African, East Asian, Semitic, Arabic, Hindi and Slavic.
